It should be emphasized that our club celebrated 10 years of existence this year, by successfully organizing the first ever brazilian jiu jitsu competition in Montenegro named: The first Brazilian jiu jitsu Montenegro Open GI and NO GI, which was a great sucess gathering 14 teams from 6 countries. Mata Leao was awarded the best Montenegrin club trophy based on the number of medals at Montenegro Open and we were also a significant constituent of A-Force BJJ Montenegro which took overall first place team trophy at the competition. Montenegrin media and guests from abroad gave us great impressions and feedback about the competition.
-We also proudly emphasize that in 2016, as a team we managed to climb high up the lists of team results of two very prestigious competitions. Italia BJJ Open, Firenze, 103 teams, 1172 competitors, we placed 4th in adult GI and 9th in adult NO GI. At the Mittel Europe Open, Trieste, among 23 teams Mata Leao A-Force BJJ MNE was 4th in adult GI and 2nd in juvenile GI team results.
-In July we organized Brazilian jiu jitsu seminar of our professor and mentor Andre „Tim“ Monteiro who came to Montenegro from New York. Professor Monteiro shared his knowledge to our members and some members were promoted to higher ranks.
-2016 will also be remembered as the first year in which Montenegro had successful representatives in the most prestigious division of this sport- black belt, as Mladen Jokmanovic and Marko Jokmanovic had notable results at IBJJF and other competitions.
-Special mention also goes to the first overseas IBJJF competition we did in 2016- IBJJF Toronto Open in Canada, where we won one gold (Srdjan Boskovic) and 4 bronze medals. During our stay in Canada our coaches, Mladen and Marko Jokmanovic, had an opportunity to teach and share their knowledge as guests at Empire MMA academy.
-One of the highlights of 2016 is that our variation of footlock, innovated in the club, that we demonstrated, both in combat and in training, during our stay in Canada, was named “Montenegro lock“ by couple of schools in USA and Canada who asked us about it, which is a great honor and pleasure for us. This technique which brings many victories to our competitors at the international level, was also mentioned in some Italian online BJJ reports after Italian BJJ Open, who also wrote about it.
Congratulations to all club members on a successful competition season and another year of walking the BJJ road together.
